Museum Hackathon: Hack ethnographic heritage!

The Museum Hackathon: Hack ethnographic heritage! was held in the Zagreb Innovation Centre (ZICER) on 1 and 2 December 2018.

The Hackathon was organised by the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb in cooperation with the Zagreb Innovation Centre and the Technical Polytechnic in Zagreb. IT fans were invited to the event – students, designers, creative entrepreneurs and other interested parties who have competed in developing the conceptual design of a digital storytelling mobile application, all in anticipation of the Ethnographic Museum permanent exhibition. Once they have completed the conceptual design, the competitors have presented and demonstrated the results of their work, followed by the selection and proclamation of the best!

For the three best solutions, prizes were awarded in the total amount of 10,000.00 Kuna. The first prize in the amount of 5000,00 Kuna, the second prize in the amount of 3000,00 Kuna, and the third prize in the amount of 1000,00 Kuna.
Participation was voluntary and the registered competitors did have to pay any registration fee, they only had to bring their own laptops.

In the Hackathon first part, experts from Helsinki presented their experiences, while experts from Zagreb presented the project main idea. The participants have familiarized with the ethnologic, historic and aesthetic values of museum collections and have been prompted to develop innovative solutions in „hacking“ the contents of the rich heritage safeguarded in the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb. With active involvement of the citizens, the Hackathon helped create in an innovative way one of the contents of the new permanent exhibition of the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb and presented the rich holdings in a completely new and interesting way. New solutions have made possible for the users to learn directly by active participation, acquire new skills and experiences, work in the interesting museum environment with an interdisciplinary team of experts and increase their employability.

With this project the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb has joined in an innovative way the marking of the European Year of Cultural heritage 2018 in Croatia and the Ethnographic Museum 100th anniversary in 2019.
